Renee Cebula
Northwest native, Renee Cebula is passionate about history. A former history educator, her research focus turned to cocktail culture in America during the World Wars. The deeper into this topic, the more her intellectual curiosities expanded to include America’s drinking history, the development of specialized tools and equipment, and the stories of mid-century decorative artists.
In the summer of 2013, Raising the Bar launched their mobile pop-up retail business. The barware boutique on wheels is a repurposed 1959 Aljo caravan. You will find the shop spring through fall at fairs, festivals, and curbside at fine craft-cocktail bars around the Pacific Northwest.
Raising the Bar launched their cocktail history classes — Raising the Bar Classes and Tours — in 2016. Tours are currently available in the Northwest. Private parties and events are also available by contacting us.
Follow Raising the Bar via social media to learn about upcoming classes, tours, and retail pop-up events. Contact us at BadassBarware@gmail.com.

The Bar-Tender’s Guide

The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks
Written in 1948 by David A. Embury, The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks is noteworthy for its witty, highly opinionated and conversational tone, as well as its categorization of cocktails into two main types: aromatic and sour; its categorization of ingredients into three categories: the base, modifying agents, and special flavorings and coloring agents; and its 1:2:8 ratio (1 part sweet, 2 parts sour, 8 parts base) for sour type cocktails.
